Bell Loan releases customer’s BVN to the public – due to N10,000

Illya Polycarp, an Abuja-based pharmacy technician, has detailed how a Bell Loan agent made his sensitive bank details public after tricking him into taking out a loan.

Polycarp told FIJ that he applied for N10,000 after receiving news from the company that he qualified for a loan from them.

He said he called one of their agents to ask questions. “I asked if the company was registered and how they handle the refund because I didn’t want a similar problem to happen again that almost cost me my reputation. The loan agent told me they were a different company and they handled the loan repayments differently,” he said.

“With all these assurances, I took out a loan of N10,000 on July 13th. I was expected to pay it back on July 20th as there was a 7 day grace period for the repayment. However, the agent also told me that I could get an extension as it was my first time.

“He said I could pay it back in 14 days, which would end on July 27 instead of the seventh day, and that each day would result in a fine of N210, which I agreed to.”

Polycarp said Bell Loan’s agent did not stick by his side of the deal because everyone on his contact list received messages from them on July 20 describing him as a criminal wanted for fraud.

“I called the agent back and asked why he was sending such slanderous messages to my contacts when we had an agreement. Another of their agents insulted me and called me unprintable names,” he said.

“As humiliating as that can be, what hurt even more was that Bell Loan released my details, including BVN. After they released it around 3am on July 22nd, I received a charge of N3,900 from an unknown source. I’m afraid that was because my dates were out there.

“This is a threat to my job because I make large purchases as my job requires. If this continues, it could affect my integrity. If I had known beforehand that this was all a scam, I would not have taken out a loan from Bell Loan.”

Audio heard a Bell Loan agent swearing at Polycarp. She said:

See, You see, all these things you tell me, everything is in your pocket. I agree that she lied to you and I do not dispute the fact. Look, if I don’t see my payment, I promise you between God and man that I’m going to put you down this afternoon. I’ll give you 12 o’clock, go and make the payment. They won’t listen unless they insult you. you are very stupid

When FIJ contacted the agent, she denied naming Polycarp or using derogatory words when speaking to him. She also said the company tries to get customers to pay off their loans in any way it can.
